HEAT AND TEMPERATURE

DEFINITION OF TEMPERATURE

Temperature can be defined as a measure of the degree of warmth or coldness of a body or a substance. This is with reference to a standard value.

A temperature measurement has the following components:

  1. A numerical value (the magnitude)
  2. A unit (the temperature scale)

Temperature can be measured in Kelvin (K), Fahrenheit (F) or degree Celsius (°C).

DEFINITION OF HEAT

Heat is a form of energy, For heat to flow there must be a difference in temperature between a body or a substance. Heat will always flow from a higher to a lower temperature.

For example:
Consider two bodies X and Y

Consider two bodies X and Y

From the above diagram:
Body Y has more heat energy than body X.
Body X has a greater temperature than body Y.

Therefore, heat flows from body X to body Y.
