-To describe the past tense in French is simple

Avoir + past tense of the verb Or Être + past tense of the verb

Past tense, most of the times, are formed like this.

For -ER verbs, drop the -er and add ‘é’ For -IR verbs, drop the -ir and add ‘i’ For -RE verbs, drop the -re and add ‘u’

Examples:

Parler becomes parlé Finir becomes fini Répondre becomes répondu

Je parle – I speak J’ai parlé – I spoke

Je finis – I finish J’ai fini – I finished

Je réponds – I answer J’ai répondu – I answered

However, 17 verbs don’t use avoir, but être.

Devenir, revenir, mourir, retourner, sortir, venir, arriver, naître, descendre, entrer, rentrer, tomber, rester, aller, monter, partir, passer

These are interesting because the whole verb changes.

Let’s take aller – to go

Je suis allé/allée Tu es allé/allée Il est allé/ Elle est allée Nous sommes allés/allées Vous êtes allés/allées Ils sont allés/ Elles sont allées

-As you can see, the endings change depending on the gender.

-This also works with reflexive verbs

Se laver – to wash

Je me suis lavé /lavée Tu t’es lavé/ lavée Il s’est lavé/ Elle s’est lavée

Nous nous sommes lavés/ lavées Vous vous êtes lavés/ lavées Ils se sont lavés/ Elles se sont lavées
