-To describe an action going on in the past (English equivalent of ‘was doing’ or ‘used to do’), The imperfect or ‘imparfait’ is used.

-This tense is easy to form with one exception. Take the nous form of the verb, and then add, (-ais, -ais, -ait, ions, -iez, -aient)

For example:

Regarder – to watch (taking ‘regardons’)

Je regardais Tu regardais Il/Elle regardait Nous regardions Vous regardiez Ils/Elles regardaient

Manger – to eat (mangeons)

Je mangeais Tu mangeais Il/Elle mangeait Nous mangions Vous mangiez Ils/Elles mangaient

-Notice the ‘nous’ and ‘vous’ forms dropping the ‘e’

Commencer – to start (commençons)

Je commençais Tu commençais Il/Elle commençait Nous commencions Vous commenciez Ils/Elles commençaient

-Notice the ‘nous’ and ‘vous’ forms dropping the ‘ç’

-Now for the ‘one exception’

être – to be

J’étais Tu étais Il/Elle était Nous étions Vous étiez Ils/Elles étaient
