Gaseous Exchange in Respiration

Gaseous Exchange surfaces have four essential properties:

1. They are thin

- The surface is 1 layer of cells, Air can diffuse through this surface rapidly, and efficiently

2. They are Moist

- This allows for Oxygen to dissolve into the moisture lining. Gases must be in the solution (dissolved) to diffuse across the cell membranes efficiently.

The line of air will enter, dissolve into the moisture, and go into the capillary, which is low in Oxygen(O2) but high in Carbon Dioxide(CO2). The Carbon Dioxide will also leave the blood through the moisture exiting the body. The oxygenated blood will now go throughout the body.

3. Large Surface Area

- Lungs must have large surface areas to allow for large amounts of air to enter at a time. This also increases the area oxygen can diffuse into the body.

4. A Good Blood Supply

- To maintain a steep concentration gradient by rapidly carrying oxygenated blood away from the lungs, and deoxygenated blood to the respiratory surface.
